Absolutely!!! That is a large amount to ask someone to spend for a dress that chances are, they won't wear again. Check your local dept store close to, or just after prom time. You can find amazing deals. As a gift, take your attendants to a local spa and treat them to mani/pedi packages. Check ahead of time to see if you can get discounted packages. In most major cities, there are wholesale districts where you can find wedding jewelry usually for less than $15 per person. Present these to your attendants as gifts at your rehersal dinner. I think it is rude to expect gifts from your wedding party. They have already given you the gift of their time, travel and the expense of being in the wedding. Please, for the sake of your friendships and karma,don't break the budgets of your wedding party.

This is an awful lot to ask. You can get very nice dresses for much less.
It's a two-way street here - the bride shouldn't request anything she knows the bridesmaid isn't financially capable of, and the bridesmaid shouldn't agree to be a bridesmaid until she is sure she can meet the financial obligation (she may also need to contribute to the cost of the shower, the bachelorette party, etc).
If the bride is really set on having her bridesmaids in a specific dress and in specific shoes, then she should offer to pay a percentage of the cost, or to release the friend as a bridesmaid with no hard feelings.

I have two friends recently in this situation, one was asked to spend $690 on a dress alone (Aussie dollars, so even more in Amercian dollars!) that she didn't even like....then the nails, hair etc etc, it made her not enjoy the experience as much as she spent close to a thousand dollars just to be in the wedding party....Another friend, the bride chose the bridesmaid dress, which was around five hundred dollars, but she said that all she wanted the bridesmaids to contribute was $250 towards all of the costs, and she and her husband paid for the rest. The bridesmaid enjoyed the experience much more genuinely, because she didn't get lumped with a huge cost just for being in someone's wedding. Why don't you consider how much you could contribute, and also I think it makes a difference whether you are choosing the dresses, or the bridesmaid is choosing the dress....why would they want to spend that much of their own money on a dress they'll never wear again...? It's not always the case, but sometimes can be. Then again, if she's minted then she probably won't mind. As I said, put yourself in her shoes. Congratulations and all the best for your wedding :)

But on the other hand when you say yes to someone about being a bridesmaid, you expect there to be some expense. Honestly I think you can find a better deal then that, it does seem a little high. NOW I know I am going to get pummeled with "then you shouldn't have been in the wedding!" But give me a break by the time us bridesmaids are done we are spending almost $500-$700 to be in a wedding.. and god forbid you have children or a bf/ spouse also in the wedding. This just gets to be too much.
Not to mention you are then expected to help with the shower and bachlorette parties. I am by no means a cheap person but some consideration of your "friends" or families feelings (and bank accounts) should be thought of!

The dress should not be more than $150. They should be able to pick their own shoes, since they all will need to be comfortable. Don't choose a backless dress unless you are going to purchase the backless bra for them.

I think that's a bit much but it really depends on the financial status of the bridesmaid. If you want the to wear things that cost that much, offer financial help if they need it. And if you're asking them to spend that much, try to make it a dress that doesn't scream "bridesmaid" so they can wear it again to other functions.
I wouldn't select a dress over $100 personally, and the ones I picked are separates so they can be worn again.

A few weeks ago, I was watching We (that's a women's channel like Lifetime, if you aren't familiar) They were saying that the average bridesmaid spends about $1400 when all is said and done. This includes attire, parties, gifts, etc.
Personally, the dress is a little bit pricey. Usually dresses are closer to $150-175. However, it doesn't mean I would not pay for it. I would need to look at the dress, the designer, the fabric.
If the dress was high quality and something I could wear again (especially if it was a neutral color like black or brown), I wouldn't mind paying.
Other then that. The undergarments and the shoes are just part of the deal.
Shoes can be worn again and it never hurts to have a good, strapless bra in your closet (you never know when you'll need it again)
The hair, makeup and nails doesn't bother me. One, because I have my nails professional done every 2 weeks. So, it's not a huge deal to me.
The hair and the makeup is something I would do even if the bride said it wasn't necessary. I really want to look my best if I'm going to standing up in someones wedding and being in the pictures.
So, I'd pay that willingly. Plus, it's not like you get your hair and makeup done professionally everyday. So, paying a little extra to have it done one day out of a year, isn't such a huge sacrifice.
Personally, it seems pretty reasonable. The dress is only about $100 more then the average. So, I don't see these expesnse as out of the ordinary.

Yes that is way to much to ask of a person.Especially with the dress being so much itself. You cant find the same style dress at a different location for a lower price? Most people know that being a bridesmaid will involve some expense. It is good idea if the bride can find a dress that is not too pricey and other things. I found some GREAT dresses at this little store that they make them to order and you can choose the color. Got my girls dresses for under $75. Shoes we just went to shoe store and got teh same ones for like under $50 for all 3 pair.
I paid for my bridesmaids hair as I wanted it professionally done. And I think that if a bride wants the bridesmaids hair to be a certain way and or nails also, she should pay or offer to pay some or all of it. Otherwise let the girls do their own hair.

My sister (who makes like 75 grand a year mind you) was appaled when I picked my girls dresses and they were $140. Yes what you are asking is too much. I think that total they should not have to spend over 200. I am trying to find cheaper shoes that they can get, and I am giving them their jewelry and paying for their hair to be done as a gift. You should consider something similar. Everyone can do their own panicure and pedicure get them all together and do it at one of your houses a few days prior. You can make it work for cheaper.

But before I assume mich else, keep a few things in mind...are your bridesmaids financially stable? I mean, that might not be to much for a college educated single girl with a good paying job, but if any of your friends are still in school or have families of their own, I would say it's too much.
I just selected the designer and color for my girls, and they get to select their own dress. Some are as cheap as 99 buck, some go up to 250. That way, they can choose a style that fits their budget and their body. As for lingerie, I'll leave that up to them, and I'm asking them to select their own pair of silver heels...I'm okay if all 4 girls select different styles. Plus, I already told my girls that their "gift" is their participation in my special day.

I have been looking at ones 120 and under, i dont even want to hit 120 but it's hard not to. and 6 bucks for a bra is ridiculous and the shoes, you will likely only wear once, and similar ones can be found cheaper, your dealing with a bridezilla.
