Traditional Kanzashi hair ornaments were made with bakelite. It's very beautiful, but bakelite is very rare. I'm certain you could sculpt them using cold porcelain or fimo.

The ornaments I looked at looked like they were made using ribbon. I imagine you could fashion ribbon flowers and use these instead.

Actuallly, they're made with suqare pieces of material.... Not ribbon. ^_^ Hope that helps! (I'm still researching, too)

Also, try looking at Gaijin Geisha at vivcore.com for some examples. ^_^ The owner has made some beautiful kanzashi. Report It

Hi, I'm from Japan. Actually, the folded fabric type of kanzashis are called tsumami kanzashi in Japanese. Basically they are made from kimono fabrics called 'chirimen' or habutae silk which is the most simple silk. Maybe you can easily find them on eBay by some of keywords in my words, I think.
